BEIRUT: Activist Hayat Arslan urged Speaker Nabih Berri to move to Msayleh Saturday, after extreme security measures enforced around his Ain al-Tineh home overwhelmed residents and shop owners in both the area and close-by neighborhoods.
“Your move to Msayleh will not block your paralyzed legislation, nor will it prevent attendance to your cancelled events,” said Arslan on her official Facebook page.
Arslan complained on behalf of the residents of Ramlet al-Baida, who have dealt with increasing preemptive measures after an assassination plot targeting Berri was uncovered last month.
“The situation has become unbearable. In Beirut the streets that are not blocked by barriers [those] that you can actually drive through, have become so few that you can count them on your fingers,” she added.
Arslan said she hopes that officials would consider her request, stressing that the move to Msayleh would allow forces to better manage security, while freeing Ramlet al-Baida from overbearing control.
After a wave of suicide bombings shook the country late last month, security forces amped up protection in a bid to prevent further attacks.
Several checkpoints have been erected in Ain al-Tineh and surrounding neighborhoods, preventing vehicles and at times passersby from entering the area.
Local shops in the vicinity have been isolated from their customers as preemptive measures blocked entrances with cement barriers.
After the implementation of the security plan in the northern city of Tripoli and the Bekaa valley were deemed successful, authorities announced that a security plan for the capitol is in the process of being drafted, and soon enough Beirut would follow suit.
In light of such considerations it seems unlikely that security measures will decrease in the coming months.
