BEIRUT: Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said Monday that government work was paralyzed because two contradictory projects could not cohabit within the same government.
“Government paralysis is due to the body’s makeup and is not related to a specific event; the cause of the problem is structural,” he told Al-Mustaqbal newspaper. “Two [contradictory] political projects cannot cohabit in the same government. They can be found in the same Parliament but not in the same government.”
Prime Minister Tammam Salam will not call for a Cabinet session this week due to lingering differences among ministers over key issues, sources close to the premier said Sunday.
Salam also accused some ministers, whom he did not identify, of obstructing the government’s work and productivity.
The prime minister will only call for a session if agreement is reached among various components of the government over an array of pending issues – including extra-budgetary spending, the appointment of deans to the LU’s council and the salaries of civil servants, a source close to Salam told The Daily Star.
Geagea again blasted the Free Patriotic Movement and Hezbollah for obstructing the election of a new president through boycotting the election sessions called for by Speaker Nabih Berri.
Geagea said he supported the arrest of Hussein Atwe from Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya who confessed to firing a batch of rockets into Israel Friday, adding that all those who tampered with the country’s stability and security should be tried, in a veiled reference to Hezbollah.
“The government must take a swift decision to regain the decision [for war and peace] and [confiscate] all nonstate arms,” he said. “Otherwise [Atwe’s arrest] would be considered unfair treatment.”
