BEIRUT: Prime Minister Tammam Salam said Sunday, Liberation Day, that liberation can only be competed with the election of a new president and the safeguarding of the country from the effects of regional turmoil.
“Liberation cannot be completed until we achieve security and safety, and fortify the country from regional repercussions,” Salam said in a statement.
“The joy of liberation cannot be completed until the return of democracy to all constitutional institutions, and that will only be achieved with the election of a new president, a new Parliament and the national awakening that the Lebanese have been waiting for,” he added.
“This occasion, which is dear to the heart of every Lebanese, comes amid critical times with the failure of Parliament to elect a new president within the Constitutional time frame. This situation requires us to be on high alert to achieve political agreement as soon as possible,” he said.
On May 25, Lebanon celebrates the withdrawal of Israeli soldiers from south Lebanon, ending 28 years of occupation.
“We will never neglect national interests ... and we are confident that everyone will continue this liberation as well as nation building and safeguarding the state,” Salam said.
He also added that on Liberation Day, the Lebanese celebrate their unity in the face of the enemy, and with “honest support” for the resistance and the Army.
