BEIRUT: Military Prosecutor Saqr Saqr demanded Tuesday that charges be filed against a pro-Assad sheikh and two others in the Aug. 23 deadly twin blasts in the northern city of Tripoli.
Saqr asked the Military Court of Cassation to file charges against Sheikh Hashem Minqara, the head of an Islamist group in Lebanon that is loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad, as well as Anas Hamze and Hasan Jaafar.
Military Investigative Judge Riad Abu Ghayda Monday sought the death penalty for 10 suspects tied to last year’s bombings in the Tripoli, including a Syrian intelligence officer.
But Abu Ghayda exonerated Minqara, Hamze and Jaafar, citing a lack of evidence.
Minqara was briefly detained last year and charged with withholding information about the Tripoli cell’s terrorist activities.
Saqr turned down the request for exoneration and called on the Military Court of Cassation to prosecute the three men for involvement in the Tripoli attacks.
Nearly 50 people were killed and more than 300 wounded in the double explosions outside Tripoli’s Al-Salam and Al-Takwa mosques.
