BEIRUT: Hezbollah commemorated Wednesday a member of the group indicted in the attempted assassination of Telecoms Minister Boutros Harb who was killed in Syria.
The party transported the body of Mahmoud Hayek in an ambulance to his hometown in the Nabatieh village of Adchit, where a mob of residents took part in the funeral procession.
His coffin, which was covered with a yellow Hezbollah flag, was carried on the crowd's shoulders to his gravestone, while the mob cheered “We respond to your call Nasrallah.”
Hezbollah officials also took part in the funeral procession.
Media reports said earlier this week that Hayek, wanted by the Lebanese authorities, was killed while fighting alongside Assad regime troops in war-torn Syria.
Hayek was indicted in February 2013 for attempting to kill Harb, but his whereabouts remained unknown.
Hezbollah refused to hand over Hayek, denying any involvement in the alleged attack.
He was also charged with carrying out acts of terror after planting a bomb in the elevator of the building that houses Harb’s office in Beirut's Badaro neighborhood.
