Cabinet convenes to fill key vacancies


BEIRUT: Lebanon’s Cabinet convened Friday to discuss 52 items on its agenda, primarily concerning key appointments in several ministries and in the Customs Department.


Prime Minister Tammam Salam and President Michel Sleiman held talks prior to the start of the session at Baabda Palace.


Retired Maj. Gen. Nizar Khalil is expected to be appointed head of the Higher Council for Customs and Shafiq Merhe as general director of the department.


Louay Shehade and Gabi Fares will most likely be appointed members of the council.


The Finance Ministry’s Director of Disbursement Alia Abbas is expected to be appointed as general director of the Economy Ministry and Judge Noueri as general director of the Justice Ministry


Youssef Naoum will be appointed general director of the Labor Ministry.
