Civil Defense volunteers protest over work status

BEIRUT: Lebanon’s Civil Defense volunteers Wednesday blocked a vital highway to pressure Parliament to pass a draft law that would make them full-time employees.

Several protesters drove fire trucks to obstruct the Maamalten highway which connects Metn to Jounieh, causing traffic on the road and surrounding areas.

Security forces rushed to the scene of the protest and reopened the road an hour later.

A group of demonstrators also briefly blocked a road near the Cola roundabout in Beirut’s southern suburbs earlier in the day.

Lawmakers are expected to discuss a draft law that would turn thousands of emergency workers who are paid an estimated $200 monthly into full-time employees, raising their salaries.
