BEIRUT: Maronite Bishop Semaan Atallah was the target of an attempted abduction over the weekend in the eastern town of Zahle, the National News Agency reported.
On Saturday, two Toyota four-wheel-drive vehicles chased Atallah's car on the Der Ahmar road but his driver sped in the direction of an Army checkpoint, prompting the alleged kidnappers to flee, the state-run agency said.
Atallah, the head of the Baalbek-Der Ahmar dioceses, confirmed the incident, it added.
The bishop headed to the diocese in Baalbek to reassure the town's residents as church bells tolled in Der Ahmar in protest of the attempted kidnapping.
