BEIRUT: A security, military and development strategy should be established to address the volatile situation in the northern city of Tripoli, says Lebanon’s Army commander.
“The Army will not hesitate to protect the people of Tripoli, without exception,” Gen. Jean Kahwagi said in remarks published Monday.
“However, the solution is not blood, but in creating a comprehensive military-security-development plan and stopping all forms of sectarian incitement,” he told the local daily As-Safir.
Thirty people were killed and more than 170 wounded in the latest bout of Syria-fuelled fighting in Tripoli which broke out March 13.
The casualty toll was the highest from a single round of fighting since the uprising in Syria began in 2011.
Kahwagi also vowed to continue countering terrorism in the country.
“The war against terrorism and terrorists is open, especially since it is threatening all the Lebanese without exception,” he said.
“No leniency for terrorists.”
A wave of deadly bombings, including suicide bomb attacks, has rocked Lebanon since last July, mostly targeting areas associated with Hezbollah.
The attacks were mostly claimed by Syrian rebel groups in retaliation for Hezbollah’s military role in Syria’s civil war alongside President Bashar Assad.
